What is noise cancelling?

Noise cancelling is also known as active noise reduction. This technology muffles sound from the environment by creating anti-noise. This is done by microphones on the outside of the noise-cancelling headphones. These pick up external sound, analyse it and subsequently turn it into counter noise. The effect? Silencing of external sounds. This is great because it makes it unnecessary to turn up the volume when you're in a noisy environment. Noise cancelling is, therefore, better for your ears and the life span of the battery.

Active and passive noise cancelling

Passive noise cancellation is the automatic muting of ambient noise when you put on over-ear, on-ear or in-ear headphones. Active noise cancellation goes further than that. It excludes outside noises completely by producing a counter noise. This is the technique called noise cancelling.

Wireless noise cancelling headphones

Wireless noise-cancelling headphones work via Bluetooth. This allows you to easily connect your headphones to your phone or computer. You can then listen wirelessly to music, podcasts and audiobooks while your phone is simply sitting in your bag. Other advantages of noise-cancelling headphones? The battery lasts much longer because you need less volume. This saves energy and reduces the need to charge your headphones.

When to use noise cancelling?

Noise cancelling is most effective when there is constant and monotonous ambient noise. Think of air conditioners, aeroplanes and engines. The headphones can easily muffle these sounds by producing anti-noise. The headphones also effortlessly filter out the noise of people talking. But what if someone is talking to you directly from nearby? If so, you can hear just that person. This is because the headphones are not completely soundproof and still allow sound to pass through.

What kind of noise-cancelling headphones do JBL have?

We have several Bluetooth headphones that work with noise cancellation. One popular headphone is the Tour One. These over-ear headphones fit completely over your ears. There are also on-ear headphones that fit on your ears, such as the Live 650BTNC. We also have in-ear noise cancelling earbuds. These include wireless earbuds such as the JBL Pro+TWS.

On- and over-ear

On-ear and over-ear headphones both perform well at passive noise reduction. The more your ears are covered, the less sound from outside comes in. That attenuating effect is reinforced when there is also active noise cancellation. This is called active noise reduction or noise cancelling. Examples of noise cancelling on-ear and over-ear headphones are the JBL Live 660NC and the JBL LIVE 650BTNC.

Noise cancelling earbuds

The JBL Live Pro 2 TWS are in-ear noise cancelling earbuds. With these earbuds, you can adjust the amount of sound from the outside world yourself. You can do this by using the buttons on the wireless earbuds or your MY JBL Headphones app.
